Kylemore & Benbrack Loop

This difficult hike through the heart of Connemara begins at the iconic Kylemore Abbey, nestled beside a tranquil lake and backed by the rugged Twelve Bens.

From the abbey grounds, the route follows a quiet path into the wilder mountain terrain of Connemara. As we ascend Benbrack (582m), the trail becomes steeper and rockier, over classic Connemara terrain. The climb rewards you with sweeping views across Connemara, Kylemore Abbey below, and the jagged outline of the Twelve Bens.

From the summit of Benbrack, you descend gently into the Mweelin Valley, a quiet and rarely trodden landscape nestled between high ridges. This glacial valley is rich in solitude and natural beauty. Expect to hear little but the wind, birdsong, and the trickle of a hidden stream. The valley is flanked by sheer rock walls and open bog, offering dramatic perspectives as we head back to Kylemore

Benchoona Horeshoe

Starting from the sands of Lettergesh Beach, this rewarding loop takes you into the wilds of north Connemara, with a steady climb up to Benchoona (543m), a prominent peak offering superb coastal and mountain views.

From the beach car park, the route heads inland along grassy paths and rough sheep tracks, quickly gaining height as you pass through open moorland dotted with bog cotton. The ascent of Benchoona is steep in places but never technical. As you climb, expansive views open up behind you over Clew Bay, Mweelrea, and Achill on a clear day.

From the summit, the panorama is breathtaking: to the east lie the Twelve Bens, and to the west, the sea glitters beyond a maze of headlands and inlets. The loop follows a wide arc over Garraun (598m) before descending back to the coast
